
Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since 1917 and currently has a population of 3,828,506 (1997). In 1950, US Congress passed Public Law 600 to establish the relationship between the US and Puerto Rico. At that time, Puerto Rico also wrote and approved its own constitution which was passed on July 25th, 1952. Puerto Rico has commonwealth status with the US.
Puerto Rico is known as the Isle of Enchantment, or La Isla del Encanto (Spanish). The flag has 5 horizontal bars alternating red (3) and white (2), with a triangle on the left side. Inside the blue triangle is a large, white, 5-point star. Based on the Cuban flag, rather than the US, the flag was designed in 1890.
